Liu Xiu

Liu Xiu was the founding monarch of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220). Zhao Qi was an important general who participated in the founding of the dynasty and helped Liu ascend the throne, but his son was convicted of manslaughter. Liu Xiu, grateful to Zhao Qi's contribution, pardoned the death
punishment for his son's murder charge and persuaded Zhao Qi, with great sincerity, to withdraw his request to retire and return to his hometown, and stay in court service.

Yang Yanhui

Yang Yanhui was an important general of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) and the fourth son of Yang Juye, the renowned veteran of the time. Yang Yanhui was captured by and surrendered to the State of Liao during the war between the states of Song and Liao. He changed his name to Mu Yi and
became the son-in-law of the Emperor of Lioa. Sixteen years later when the states of Song and Liao were engaged in war again, Yang disclosed to the Princess his real identity as well as his longing for meeting his mother. With the help of the Princess, Yang passed the border to have a short
reunion with his family members.

Xue Pinggui

Xue Pinggui was a character in the opera. He used to be a beggar, but was unexpectedly selected as husband by Wang Baochuan, the Prime Minister's daughter. But good times didn't last long before Xue fell victim to the treacherous court officials and was enlisted in the West Expedition Troop. Xue
later became a high-ranking official after years of military service in Xiliang, at sacrifice of being separated from his wife for eighteen years. Upon receiving his wife's letter written in blood delivered by dove, he hurried home. When they met at Wujia Slope and the truth was finally revealed,
the couple recognized each other and got reunited.
