Just getting back into newsinchinese, and I noticed when I went to the Entertainment tab, it just

Re: Why do caucasians love English?

It's probably because they speak mostly English at work, and as a result, sometimes English
words/phrases roll off the tongue faster than Chinese ones.

Quote:

I want to get a bit off-the-topic - when I was at middle school (final year) and we studied Lu
Xun's style, our teacher made a comment that many regarded Lu Xun as the greatest writer (or one
of the greatest writers) in Modern China but it was always easier to make criticism than to really
make things happen. I still remember it clearly after all these years. It was not really about the
writer, or the literature. Our Chinese teacher taught us more than that.

Hahahahahahahahahaha! Your teacher's word is right! You’re so lovely! I really like you and your
teacher! (Take it easy, I’m not a lesbian.) I want to tell you another thing else might be
long-winded and irrelevant too. According to some Premier Zhou Enlai’s staff’s memory, Zhou
used to mention that he wanted to write a book to tell others his mistakes in his whole life to
give some enlightenment to the next generation. Though he asked his staff to help him collect some
materials, none of them dared to do so. It is so pity that this great book can't make its show to
this world.

Cheers!

Looks like someone at SARFT finally got around to viewing the deleted scenes, poor Tang Wei is now
persona non-grata. SARFT must be a fantastic place to work, you just wait for something to be
popular, then jerk your knee and ban it.

studentyoung -

Quote:

poor Tang Wei is now persona non-grata.

Hehe. In my opinion, Miss Tang must be even more heated after this. You know what is called
“antagonistic psychology逆反心理”, right?

Quote:

SARFT must be a fantastic place to work, you just wait for something to be popular, then jerk your

No. Hehe. I think SARFT is helping Miss Tang get her name even more well-known. Hehe. Poor SARFT,
it is doing something so dramatically opposite (南辕北辙).

Cheers!

dalaowai -

I still don't understand why she was banned, however Tony and his 肉球 weren't.

studentyoung -

Quote:

I still don't understand why she was banned, however Tony and his 肉球 weren't.

That’s because Tony Leung is an HKer. If Tony were banned, it could cause even more vehement
discussions and uproars in not only mainland but also in Hong Kong. It is the last thing the
central government wants to see.

Cheers!

Lu -

Perhaps because a woman having sex in a hotel room with a married man is more shocking than a
married man having sex in a hotel room with a woman? Somewhere else I read that it also was
because her character was 'unpatriotic'. Or perhaps it is because Tony Leung is more famous and
established.
Poor Tang Wei. Sure she can go to Hong Kong or the US or wherever and make some more great movies,
but it would have been better if she had the choice to stay right at home if she wanted to.

Luobot -

The primary reason for the ban wasn’t the sex scenes, which were deleted, but because Tang
Wei’s character falls in love with the Japanese collaborator. Of course, Ang Lee’s intention
(as was Eileen Chang's) was not to glorifying a traitor, but to portray the complexity of life.

According to: ":

Quote:

the authorities in Beijing have since censured officials at SARFT for allowing the “film to be
released, charging that they had passed a film that was a “glorification of traitors and
insulting to patriots”. Several officials at SARFT are believed to have been fired or punished
in the crackdown.

Also, poor Tang Wei loses an advertising promotion deal “reported to be worth six million
yuan.” Had she know, she might have overcome her passion and discovered her inner patriotic duty
to murder the Japanese collaborator (played by Tony Leung) with her bear legs. Perhaps that would
have been better tolerated.

bhchao -

But why ban her now if the movie has already been showing in Chinese theatres for several months
now?

Allowing the movie to be shown and then banning the actress several months later seems fuzzy.
Might as well ban the movie on opening day.

Outofin -

I like her.

I heard the government bans films and directors, but never ban actors. So what happened?!

danwei just posted a video of Zhang Xuan.
The song in the classic movie by Zhang Xuan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbQEBrN84KI
The song in Lust Caution by Tang Wei: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=towfXZhn9Xo

They could not ban Ang Lee either because banning the popular director would create a huge uproar
in Taiwan, One of the last things the central government want to see are anti-China sentiments
influencing the vote on March 22nd.

Lee is also an artistic advisor to the Olympics.

Tang Wei did not have leverage power unfortunately.

Well... I have a new version of the Windows error... I have been trying to run the program on a
Chinese version of Windows XP SP2... when I try to start the program... all I get is a black dos
window and then a error message saying that it is going to close.

I tried to do the workaround, but I cannot identify what is the option... and cannot find anything
indicating a US version of unicode. Any other suggestions about what to do?

It would be great if you posted the error message in the black box. If the sensitive bug in GTK+

I have one suggestion... maybe you can also provide for showing the character.

I've tried installing SGC on the latest Debian but the process tells me that I need libzip.so.1.
Libzip.so.1 isn't available in any of the Debian repositories. I could try and install a rpm of
it, but I've been told that could get nasty. If anyone has a solution... Thanks.

the "Hong Kong F visas" link goes to a write message page.

http://www. /nuwiki...g+Kong+F+visas.

Note: also a HK company can write invitation letters (we do that all the time). A good place I got
many visas: http://www.jta.biz/chinavisa/china_visa.htm

That does not apply to many, but you can also enter China with an APEC card with has a "CN" on the
back. APEC cards can be applied for in several APEC countries and last for 3 years, means 3 years
Visa free access to China.

It should also be noted the passports holders of Japan, Singapore, Brunei can enter China without
any visa.

For "what is this called", I would say "這個叫甚麽?" "這 / 那是甚麽?" would also do. But
it means "what is this / that?" IMHO there is not a great big difference between the two questions.

The translation requests forum is designed for four main types of question:

1) Tattoos. I think generally people on here will recommend you don't get a Chinese character
tattoo, and please do have a good long read of Hanzismatter to see why. There's a very real chance
of getting something incomprehensible, ugly, and permanent. But if you want to go ahead, read on.

2) Random objects. Bought a vase with a Chinese character on and curious about what it means?
Scribblings on the back on an old photo you think might be Chinese? Post away.

3) Chinese names - often for a tattoo, so see 1) as well. Could be either a traditional style two
or three character Chinese name, or a transliteration of an English name. Please have a read of
this and this to familiarize yourself with the issues involved in converting non-Chinese names
into Chinese characters.

4) Quick Chinese to English or English to Chinese translations. Please make an effort to work
these out yourself with a dictionary or online translation engine before posting, then ask us
about what you haven't been able to figure out.

Posting guidelines:
Give us as much information as possible - even if it's not directly relevant it makes for a more
interesting post and means you are more likely to get some help. "What does it say on this vase"
is ok, but a history of how this vase came to be in your family adds a bit more value.

If at all possible, make some efforts to find your own answers online, and let us know what you've
already done so we don't duplicate your work. Chinese versions of lots of English names can be
found online, etc.

If you are actually learning Chinese rather than just looking for a quick 'it means XXX' answer,
you should probably be posting elsewhere - have a look at the forums listing and see if you can
spot a better place.

Ah, I see the characters are 为人民服务.

Is 为人民服务 a political slogan?

Pardon me, why not to regard it as a slogan on commonweal or volunteer?

JimmySeal -

Yes, it is one of Mao's most famous slogans:

http://no-sword.jp/blog/2005/03/how-...tionaries.html

For more on Cameron Diaz's "volunteer" activities:

Yah it was a political slogan but sure sounds like the motto of most governments (whether or not
they actually believe it and try to follow it).

HashiriKata -

Quote:

Pardon me, why not to regard it as a slogan on commonweal or volunteer?

If you do so and not make a fuss, you'd miss out the chance to cash in on the two world-famous

muyongshi -

For once I wish I couldn't "follow the money".

Huang Jialuo -

Well, I'm 5 days late to discuss the topic, haha. I live and study in Peru!
Frankly, I don't think the Star w/slogan bag should have been taken so strongly. I mean, you just
need to tell her: "don't wear it", period. My guess is a few people might have been reminded of
this hurtful scenario, and instead of confronting her about it, they passed the word, the media
found out and acted upon it: most probably to incite people to find more about Peru, to bring the
focus to this nation (I guess it really did.. :P).
I can assure you however that though there is a large Chinese population here in Peru (much more
cantonese than mandarin speakers), they all live in the coast of Peru, which is the left side of
the country and not in Cuzco (almost the center of the country) where Cameron Diaz was seen. So,
if they were hurt, it was not because of the slogan, but because of the red-star (and possibly the
green color resembling the military too). I do not really remember those times of cruelty as I
live in the capital, but it was a time in which a LOT of violence took place (approx 69300 dead).
The terrorist group AND the military were both responsible for the massacre led by the
unjustifiable hatred for the farming indigenous people.
It is quite curious, because I just had my final exam of Peruvian History yesterday.
I hope I don't fail though... :P

trien27 -

I doubt people in Peru really knows Chinese. It's probably of Mao's picture. I've seen this bag
off line. It's not offensive [if you know all 5 Chinese characters written on it in running
Traditional script: wei ren min fu wu? "To serve the people" ]

AJBryant -

Quote:

I think the "to serve people" slogan is generally harmless.

Well, so are phrases like "Work makes [you] free," but the cultural baggage of the quotation may
be severely problematic. (For context: Google "arbeit macht frei.")

It first depends on your Chinese skills. They really are quite unyielding when it comes to
employing he correct tones in class, which is really useful. 3+3 tone always gets me as does 一
+ (1, 2, 3)

If your level is even passable, they'll customize lessons for you. For example, I've studied there
for the last four months, during which time I've finished the first three books of NPRC and the
first two books in the Boya Chinese series. I've got a job for the Olympics which requires me to
work with taxi drivers around Beijing and so in July my teachers are preparing a few days of class
solely devoted to those words, listening and speaking only since I won't be writing to the drivers.

Like I said before the teachers really great too, because I'll finish class but stick around and
talk with them, practice up. They're invested in you learning Chinese, which I think doesn't
always hold true with some other language programs.

liuzhou -

Please tell me you're not planning to teach English!

panny -

Any advice Lihuzhou?

magores -

Okay, I'll take a stab at answering the question....

-As far as not knowing Chinese... Don't worry about that.

-Learning Chinese while here ... Have it written into your contract that classes/lessons are
provided.

-I can't recommend any agencies, because I didn't go that route before I came here. I started
looking around here, and at Dave's ESL Cafe. I looked, I read, I asked a few specific questions,
and then I responded to a couple of ads I saw somewhere.

--
Your mileage may vary ... I believe I "lucked into" a very good situation. You may have the same
luck your first try. You may not. Follow your instincts.
--

My main advice would be to do some research. People will tell you, often before you ask, which
schools are good, or bad. What locations are good, or bad. Etc.

Search is your friend.

liuzhou -

I have no wish to sound negative or sarcastic, but your first post is full of mistakes in basic
English - mistakes which Chinese students would spot instantly.

Hence my question.

panny -

Thanks Magores, will keep your advice in mind

panny -

My mistake for not proof-reading!, but I don't think it will determine my overall level of english

kdavid -

Panny: If you're serious about learning while teaching you'll need a good Mandarin-only
environment (i.e. not Beijing, Shanghai or another big city where many people speak English), a
school that provides lessons as well as resources for independent learning, and a good long-term
plan. I highly recommend that you check out the following link. I am personally involved with this
program and believe it to be something that may suit what you are interested in doing.

www.willexcel.com/tesol/main.htm

terryswift -

this looks like a terrible deal to me. 22 hours of teaching for a paltry 4000rmb? good luck trying
to learn mandarin with that kind of workload! also, unless this is a different kdavid, it looks
like the 'recommender' is involved with this company.

imron -

Outside of big cities, that's not such a bad deal, and if you were working for a government school
instead of a private company, you'd be hard pressed to earn much higher than that. Also keep in
mind that the cost of living in much lower outside of big cities, so you might end up saving more
than what you would in say Beijing or Shanghai, even though you have a lower salary.

No offense intended but....

Please have someone proofread the English on your site.

If you are marketing to English speakers that want to learn Chinese, then your presentation needs
to be in (more or less) proper English.

I'm relatively forgiving about mistakes in spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. The
average person in the US that is considering learning Chinese is less so.

A quick proofread by a native English speaker will make your site much more marketable, and
therefore, potentially, more profitable.

Just a suggestion.

/Please don't correct my grammar, punctuation, etc. I wasn't suggesting myself as the answer. I
was just making an observation.

公办 would be government run. 民办 would be non-governmental, and my inclination is to say it
would be funding by local people or an organization for public benefit - ie the 民办教师, as
opposed to for profit (which would be 私立). I'm not sure how clear-cut a line that is though.

大家好!

I just recently started using Ubuntu Linux after many years as a Windows user. I'm really enjoying
Linux so far, but installing 3rd party software is still somewhat of a mystery to me, as I haven't
had the time that I'd like to research the matter.

I love ZDT, but the instructions for installation seem a bit difficult to me. I've successfully
downloaded the file to my home folder. It seems that I have the dependencies fulfilled, though I
don't have Mozilla to my knowledge. When I tried to extract the file using a terminal window, I
received this message as seen in the attachment.

Could anyone help me install ZDT by going through the process in a step-by-step manner? I'm very
eager to study Chinese on my PC again, and to date I have no software installed for this on the
Ubuntu side of my machine (and I don't want to run XP if I can avoid it!).

Thanks so much in advance!

Hey,

Did you make sure that the archive is actually in the directory that you're in? Do a 'ls' command
to make sure. Once it's unpacked, you can go to the created 'zdt' directory and type ./zdt to run.

Let me know if you still have problems. I run Ubuntu myself as well.

Chris

atmartin50 -

Hi Chris,

Thanks a lot for your help (and sorry I'm only months late in thanking you!).

I got ZDT installed and working. However, if you don't mind, I have several questions for you:

1. Can I create an application launcher in order to avoid using the terminal? If so, how? And is
there an icon that I can use (preferably the one in the ZDT splash screen)? I looked through the
files but was unable to find it.

2. When I was using ZDT while running XP, I created backup files for my flashcards. Can those be
used in Ubuntu? If so, how?

3. Please see my attached screen shot. What do you think could be causing the blurry characters
you see? Have you ever encountered this before?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Regards,
Aaron

bogleg -

Hi Aaron,

1) So here's how I create a launcher on my system (Ubuntu + Gnome). On the desktop, I right-click
and choose 'Create launcher'. I type in a name and I fill in the directory to the zdt executable
in the command field. Let me get back to you on the icon, there currently isn't one yet, but maybe
I can steal the one from the Mac side.

2) You can definitely use the backup file between systems. It's just a text file. Just copy the
backup file over to your Ubuntu system and use the Restore Data function.

3) I did notice the blurry characters on my system too. I think it's just the font. You can play
around with the fonts in the Preferences (Window > Preferences > Font).

Hope that helps

Chris

bogleg -

Hey Aaron,

Try to use the attached png as your icon.

Chris

atmartin50 -

Thanks a lot for your prompt replies, Chris! Much appreciated!

Everything is working fine now. I did get an error message when trying to restore my backup files,
but I'll try again and let you know if I continue to have problems. Thanks again for all your
help----I'm looking forward to studying again!

All the best,
Aaron

atmartin50 -

Hi Chris,

I ran into 2 problems just now:

1. Restoring the backup file from my XP days resulted in the error message you see in the attached
screen shot.

2. After moving a few files around (which I probably shouldn't have done; being a neat freak, I
like seeing only directories in my home folder), I get the error message seen in the other screen
shot.

Could you help me to resolve these? Thanks very much in advance!

Aaron

bogleg -

Hi Aaron,

1) Can you send me your log files? There are two files, [ZDT Install]/zdt.log and [ZDT
Install]/workspace/.log. Can you also send me your backup file as well? Did this error happen
before problem #2? You'll need to fix #2 first and then check if it solves this problem.

2) So first, you need to locate your user.script and user.properties files. This is where all your
user data resides. Then start ZDT, and go to Window > Preferences > Database. Click 'Change
database' and select the location where those two files are located. Then restart the program.

Hope that helps

Chris

atmartin50 -

Hi Chris,

Did you receive those log files I sent to you?

Thanks again for your help and advice! This is exactly what drew me to the Linux/Open Source
community to begin with... I hope I get proficient enough in Ubuntu to help out some folks in the
future just as you have helped me.

Regards,
Aaron

bogleg -

Hi Aaron,

I don't think I received your email. Could you try resending it? Were you at least able to solve
the second error?

Chris

Woo~~~ I bet you were given a formidable assignment.

It's buddhist sutra '般若波罗蜜多心经' (Sanskrit: Prajna Paramita Hrdaya Sutra, English:
the Heart Sutra??), short as '心经'.

I found two links http://www.buddhanet.net/heart.htm
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_Sutra

Hope them helpful. But I have no idea about it.

Is there any Buddhist on our forum?

so this is a sample of sutra from a budhist script written in chinese right...

raincoat -

Waa.. that seems so difficult? Are you in E class or something?

kevincn -

Even me, a chinese Phd. student, don't know what it means accurately.

I've just tried to learn.
I can just try to say about the first two sentences.
"空" is "incorporeity"; "色" is 'entity' that you can see.
“空不异色,色不异空”
The incorporeity isn't different with the entity. The entity isn't different with the incorporetiy.
It means there is no entity that could don't change forever.
But people only can regard what you see as the entity ,and presume it is immutable, existent and
real.
And the theory is about your heart and your thinking.

Hi,
I just found this forum and it looks like a treasure. This is my second post. the reason for which
i found the forum in the first place, was to ask for a translation too, but from Spanish/English
to Mandarin. I hope I'm not doing something wrong by posting this in your thread, kevincn.

so i need help with this (it is for a poster (graphic design)):

"Ideas para reConocernos."
"Ideas to reCognize ourSelves."

if anyone can give me some help i will greatly appreciate it.

GOD~ Not only philosophy, but also Ancient Chinese Language
IT’S REALY HARD TO translate WORD BY WORD,
let me try

般若波罗密多咒(name of a Buddhist scripture)
照见五蕴皆空,度一切苦厄。
Desire is the root cause of our suffering, there will be no pain,if you give it away .
舍利子kinda like "amen"
色不异空,空不异色。色即是空,空即是色。when you do that, temptations meaning
nothing to you,
受想行识,亦复如是。and every thing will be changed, including your mind and behavior.
舍利子!
是诸法空相,不生不灭,不垢不净,不增不减。
是故,空中无色,无受、想、行、识;无眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意;无色、
、香、味、触、法;无眼界,乃至无意识界;
无无明,亦无无明尽,乃至无老死,亦无老死尽;
无苦、集、灭、道,无智亦无得,以无所得故,菩提萨埵;
依般若波罗密多故,心无罣碍;无罣碍故,无有恐怖,远离颠倒梦想,究竟
槃。
Whitout Desire, everything will be the same to you , birth and death, smudge and neatness, increase
and decrease,light and dark…
Whitout Desire, what you see is nothing, what you hear is nothing, what you tast is nothing, what you
feel is nothing…everything is nothing.
Whitout Desire, you will Never fear, and ascending to a new life.
三世诸佛,依般若波罗密多故,得阿耨多罗三藐三菩提。GOD’S NAME
故知,般若波罗密多是大神咒,是大明咒,是无上咒,是无等等咒,
般若波罗密多咒is valuableness.
能除一切苦,真实不虚。故说般若波罗密多咒.
It will take your suffering away, and that’s what the般若波罗密多咒 mean.

trien27 -

robert otolll, why are you asking for a Spanish translation on a Chinese site?!

空 = empty or something that doesn't exist ; 色 = color or something that exists as compared to
空.

even i am a chinese university student,i do not know the meaning,

I hate to dis a school and contradict a previous poster, but Bridge school is not for serious
chinese learners - it's for ex-pat wives with nothing better to do with their time. I made the
mistake of when first arriving in Beijing of believing their ads in CityWeekend and That's BJ and
signed up for a month . . . . . left after 2 weeks when I realised that no-one was actually there
to learn chinese and joined a proper school.

As for the original poster, I had that same attitude when I started - that I was only going to
learn to speak and would ignore the characters, but then after a while realised that knowing the
characters was a vital part in the learning process and helped the spoken chinese.

Just a little suggestion for arkilok, maybe you would want to learn the character as well, you'll
be surprised of how much wonderful beautiful things you may discover in this language. Give it a
try ;)

-葛亚辉- -

yeah....learning characters seems hard at first but gets easier and easier the more you know, and
it DEFINITELY helps you remember words and definitions...i would highly recommend you just learn
to write, its a little more of a time committment but 1) you'll have WAY more and better schools
to choose from and 2) a small increase in time commitment yeilds a large number of advatanges...

just my $0.02.

(if someone knows a good 成语 for "just my two cents" btw, PM it to me....)

simonlaing -

Hi all,

I know I am joining a chorus of voices. But as one who wasted 2 years of Tutoring learning just
pinyin and basic reading, If you really are serious about learning Chinese you should learn to
read and write characters at the same time as you learn Pinyin and speaking.
I found in the 3 year of study when I started studying full time and had to learn to write the
characters. I had to re-learn 80% of the words that I knew in Pinyin form.

I would only recommend your strategy if you plan on solely being a visiting business man who
doesn't spend more than a few weeks in China a year. If you are staying long term I think
investing in learning to read and write is worth it.
I espicially endorse the learning radiacals of characters before learning the characters method.
(Learning characters then becomes like learning to spell in English) A nu zi 女pang with an er
zi子 pang makes hao 好.

Also no Chinese person writes in purely pinyin.
The other poster's comment on Computer aiding the writing process is true. But I think to learn
the characters long term you should also be able to write them on paper. (I found I forgot how to
accurately write the characters using this method though I'd often get the outline some what
right.)

Good luck,
Simon Laing
