Shakespeare with a Korean Twist

( 2008-06-23 )

A Korean version of Shakespeare's Macbeth is one of the highlights of Korean Week, which kicked off in Beijing on June 18. It will combine with many traditional dance and music shows at the National Center for the Performing Arts.

The program will showcase Korean art and culture as planned by China's Ministry of Culture and Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

It is part of Beijing's Meet in Beijing Arts Festival, which celebrates the upcoming Games.

Six performing arts companies from South Korea are expected to offer Beijing audiences diverse dance, music and theatrical productions to demonstrate both traditional and contemporary arts.

The National Opera of Korea will bring the opera Match Made in Heaven to the Century Theater on June 28 and 29.

Directed by Yang Jeong Woong and conducted by Kim Deok Ki, the comedic opera tells of the clashes that exist between the strict marriage customs of Old Korea and the younger generation's pursuit for love and freedom.

The Seoul Performing Arts Company will perform The King's Jerster at the Century Theater on July 5 and 6. The musical includes a variety of traditional performance ranging from street operas to acrobatics.

The Korean musical, which is based on the 2005 South Korean blockbuster hit-film The King and the Clown - was drawn from Kim Tae-woong's play Yi. Kim's play has also enjoyed popularity in Southeast Asia, including China.

The Korean Arts Management Service has also organized South Korea's top three contemporary theater companies to give performances in the capital.

Theater Gol Mok Gil will show Beautiful Youth at the Chaoyang Nine Theaters from July 2 to 4. The play is about a father, who lost his job and his problem son, who does nothing but fool around all day.

Dining in Beijing

( 2008-06-27 )

As China's capital city, Beijing offers visitors an exhaustive variety of Chinese cuisine.

It is said that there are two things that you must do when visiting Beijing: One is to enjoy the roast duck and the other is to take a stroll on the Great Wall. There is simply quite nothing like a perfectly roasted duck with bronzed crispy skin and tender, succulent meat. There are literally
dozens of restaurants that serve this famous dish, but perhaps the best known are Quanjude and Bianyifang.

Imperial Cuisine is the foundation of Beijing cuisine. An imperial feast is characterized by complex preparation techniques and the freshest ingredients. It also can feature elaborate presentation including colorful vegetable carvings. Probably the finest expression of classic imperial cooking is
the Tan Jia Cuisine served at the Beijing Hotel.

Cuisine from many different cultures permeates the Beijing dining scene. With literally thousands of restaurants available, dining choices are practically unlimited.

Another kind of food you must taste is the Beijing Snack. There are probably 200 varieties of snacks in Beijing including Quick-Fried Tripe (Bao Du); Pot-stewed Tripe (Luzhu); Bean Soup (Dou Zhi) and Sweet Cake (Tang Huo Shao). Most of the snacks can be found throughout the city, but a prime
location is in the Qianmen Gate area.

A dazzling array of snacks from every corner of the country is available in Beijing. Longfusi, Wangfujing, Donghuamen and Gui Jie (Ghost Street) streets are other premier locations for these mouth-watering delights.

If you wish to take a break from Chinese cuisine, Beijing offers a vast number of foreign restaurants featuring dishes from virtually every location on the globe. Popular foreign dining spots include Hidden Tree (Mediterranean); Justine's at the Jianguo Hotel (French); Courtyard (Fusion);
Danieli's (Italian) and Matsuko (Japanese). Well-known fast food chains abound as well. You can always find KFC, Pizza Hut, and A&W Root Beer among others.

Dance Drama Tang Wan, Rediscovering Classical Beauty

A Chinese dance drama telling a great love story between Lu You (1125-1210) and Tang Wan, both famous ancient Chinese poets, was performed March 8–10 at the China Grand Theater.

A splendid combination of traditional Chinese culture and modernity, Tang Wan was adapted from a screenplay by Wang Chuanliang and was presented by the Beijing Dance Academy, the top dance school in China.

Lu You and Tang Wan’s story happened at Shen Garden in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). Lu and his cousin Tang were grew up together and loved each other deeply, but because of interference by their family they had to separate. Many years later, they met up again at the Shen Garden. The
sentimental poet wrote a sad and moving poem for his beloved and Tang wrote a poem in reply. Lu’s love for Tang lasted the rest of his life, after she passed away in loneliness. The two poems Lu and Tang wrote are engraved in a monument in the garden today.

Wang Chuanliang visited Shen’s Garden several times during his service in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. Touched by the story of Lu and Tang, he wrote the screenplay for Tang Wan. After more than 800 years, the story of Tang and Lu has proven to be a timeless classic. It’s hard to define right
and wrong in this heartbreaking story of a woman’s tragedy. However, the classical beauty of traditional Chinese women exemplified by Tang and her selfless love are rarities in the frenzy of our contemporary society. The theme delivered by the drama with its elegant body gestures is an eternal
theme: true love lasts forever.

Exhibition of Chinese Abstract Art

The ability to think about cultural problems and the ability to search for personal expression are two parallels that exist between artistic expression in both the East and the West. Artists trained in China during the 20th century received very strict training in the realist styles of painting.
Though artists from the East and West have different reasons and approaches to abstract art, they share the same aesthetic logic in their decision to break away from the orthodox training to seek free expression and a thorough an understanding of one’s in innermost being.
